Katrina Music Project aims to preserve the music and heritage of New Orleans
For the past three years, photographer Dove Shore has traveled the country shooting portraits of musicians touched by Hurricane Katrina. These photos, along with song lyrics, writings and Hurricane Katrina disaster photos, will be collected in Katrina Music Project, a coffee table book slated for release next August, the 5th anniversary of the disaster.
100% of the proceeds from the sales of the book will go towards the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund, Sweet Home New Orleans and MusicCares.
Katrina Music Project is slated to be sold through stores such as Barnes & Noble, Borders and Target. It will also be available worldwide online at Amazon.com and other websites.
Every dollar of each sale will go to the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund. Many local musicians lost instruments and studios in the hurricane, which this fund helps to replace.
Today there are still hundreds of musicians trying to get back to their home - New Orleans. The NOMHRF helps displaced musicians get back to New Orleans, finding them a place to stay in the Habitats for Humanity Musicians Village or elsewhere.
Many musicians have already jumped on board the project. Here's a list of some of the artists and bands that have already volunteered: Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, My Morning Jacket, Joss Stone, Wilco, Robert Randolf, Flea (of Red Hot Chili Peppers), Chris Stills, Ziggy Marley, Palio Nutini, Down, Dan Dyer, Questlove, Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, The Meters and Dirty Dozen Brass Band. More to come...
